Hemang Kamal Badani

Born: 14 November 1976, Madras (now Chennai)
Major Teams: Tamil Nadu, India.
Known As: Hemang Badani
Batting Style: Left Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Slow Left Arm Orthodox

Profile:
His international career may be less than ten matches old but Hemang Badani has already made a remarkable impression. An ice-cool temperament under pressure separates him from several of his age peers as he unmistakably revealed in the one-day series against Zimbabwe. Badani's unbeaten 58 at Cuttack and bustling 77 at Rajkot were both crafted in the face of precarious circumstances, the former knock winning him a Man of the Match award in just his fourth game. Each time there was not an iota of extravagance as he stealthily accumulated his runs. Badani carves the ball around with a touch of elan, discriminating in favour of the gaps, and his front foot drive played on the rise through cover is especially pleasing.

Badani made his first class debut against Kerala in the 1996-97 season following a fine showing for India Under-19 against South Africa at home. Before long he was stepping up a gear, playing for India A in the SAARC one-day tournament in Dhaka in 1998. His selection for the Asia Cup last May was not surprising, coming just after two elegant knocks of 162 & 63 in the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Mumbai. Badani looks ready to cut his teeth in the Test arena but a surfeit of quality operators in the middle order renders the likelihood slightly distant. His occasional orthodox slow left armers and fleet-footedness in the field do no harm at all to his prospects.

Lakshmipathy Balaji

Full Name: Lakshmipathy Balaji
Born: 27 September 1981, Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu
Major Teams: Tamil Nadu, India.

Also Known As: Naidu
Batting Style: Right Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium Fast
Profile:
Just 21 years of age, much is expected of medium-pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji. The youngster, still finishing university in Chennai, has risen to the national level in a short span of time. With Tamil Nadu opting for a predominantly mediumpace driven strategy in the Ranji Trophy, with something in the home wicket for the quick men, Balaji has become an intergral part of his state team. Bowling with a whippy, quick-arm action, Balaji has the ability to bowler quicker deliveries, yorkers or bouncers without a perceptible change in action. When he took five-wicket hauls in several consecutive Ranji Trophy matches in the last season, his name began doing the rounds in cricket circles. With the World Cup in mind, the Indian think tank has used the one-dayers against West Indies to try out several cricketers and this, more than anything else, has fast-tracked Balaji's rise to the highest level.

Mohammad Kaif

Born: 1 December 1980, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh
Major Teams: Uttar Pradesh, Leicestershire, India.
Known As: Mohammad Kaif
Batting Style: Right Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Right Arm Off Break

Profile:
Immensely gifted, Mohammad Kaif's inclusion in the Indian team against South Africa was widely welcomed. During the last couple of years he has impressed not only with his stylish strokeplay and steely temperament which has seen him perform well under pressure, but also with his agile fielding. As skipper of the victorious Indian under-19 side in the World Cup in Sri Lanka in January 2000, Kaif also proved himself to be a skillful captain. He came up through the ranks representing the under-19 team against Sri Lanka in 1999 (earning handsome praise from the coach, K Srikkanth) and then playing with much success for the India A team on the tour of West Indies early in 2000.

But it was his showing in the under-19 World Cup that brought him into national reckoning. This was followed by two superb knocks of 90 and 93 in the Challenger Trophy Series - performances that saw him edge that much closer to the India cap. He did not exactly fail in his only Test against a rampaging South African side. A stint at the National Cricket Academy and a training trip to Australia played a major role in furthering the cricketing education of Kaif. A series of high scores in the domestic circuit followed and this saw him drafted into the Indian one-day side where his useful batting and athletic fielding have made him an indispensable member.(
